We got a hot tip that the Karl Strauss Brewery was serving up a burger called, The Big Beer Burger. A Burger that is basted in their Karl Strauss Amber Lager, the onions are cooked in their Red Trolley Ale, and the bacon is brined in their Woodie Gold!!!!! Holy Smokes. A burger that includes beer IN IT? Amazing and delicious. As we couldn't decide which beer would pair best... We tried ALL of them, yes, all of them. Great beer and a great burger.

The Foodie Girls were invited to a very special tasting by their Foodie Friends Dina and Davide in San Diego. We feasted at the new Italian restaurant and Wine Bar in the heart of Hillcrest, Tre Porcellini, which translates to 'The Three Little Pigs.' And FEAST we did. Chef-Owner Roberto Gerbino is doing amazing things here. We had quite the spread of delicious appetizers to begin with but the star of the appetizers is the Mac and Cheese Risotto (pictured below). It is TO DIE FOR.

The entrees are equally as impressive especially the Beef Short Ribs and their homemade pastas. They have an extensive wine list and fabulous desserts as well. Head down to Tre Porcellini for lunch or dinner TODAY.

As you know we love to take recommendations so when Foodie Girl fans, Tom and Lita wrote in about the The China Cafe, we knew we had to check it out! Good thing too because it's hard to find good Chinese food and the The China Cafe totally delivered. We ordered the crispy, golden Calamari as a starter followed by the Sesame Chicken and Basil Chicken. Both lunch plates came with rice, vegetable egg roll and choice of soup (wanton, egg drop or hot & sour). The proportions are generous and the food is quality!

The China Cafe has been in business for 13 years! Super friendly & fast service to boot! Stop in and tell them that The Foodie Girls sent you, who were sent from Tom and Lita!

BBQ... On a School Bus?!?! That's right, Dan Parrot is making barbeque out of a school bus. And it's dang good. Why on a bus? Well, he wants to give Austin great tasting food without the rip-off pricing. So, why not sell it out of a bus? Dan has had a long career in the restaurant industry, traveling all over the world and even fine-tuning his culinary skills at the Cordon Bleu. Dan and his team have a smoker and full operating kitchen on this bus and they're ready to whip you up some ribs, brisket, sausage, mac and cheese wedges, bread pudding, sandwiches... We tried all of this and more and it was oh, so, good.

If you're looking for an original Austin experience, you've gotta check out the bus.

Tuesday through Sunday, they're located at MLK and Alexander, right across the tracks of the new CapMetro MLK Station .

Do you sometimes have a hankerin’ for a great hot dog and a cold beer…but those vender's on the side of the street quite frankly scare you? Yeah, us too. Then head to Frank, on 4th and Colorado where the hot dog is reinvented. Co - owners Jen Northcutt, Yancy Peveto, and creative director Christian Helms among the rest of the Frank team have created a unique restaurant whose concept centers around an American favorite; the hot dog. The menu features Artisan Sausages and regional favorites such as the Chicago Style Dog, Southern Slaw Dog, and Chili Cheese Dog.

Frank restaurant was kind enough to extend an invitation to the Foodie Girls for their private tasting as part of Austin’s Restaurant Week. Hors d'oeuvre's circulated and we found ourselves eating a Gator Boudin. After asking around it was indeed, alligator. Foodie Girls – giving Andrew Zimmern a run for his money! A crunchy, perfect little ball of gator, delicious.

Next we headed to the upstairs bar and lounge. It was quaint and cozy. A perfect place to go with an intimate group of friends. As down to earth as a hot dog is, so are the people running this joint. Warm, funny and welcoming we found ourselves getting served 2 kick-ass Chicago Style Dogs. In a poppy seed bun, sat a Vienna beef dog, covered in chopped onion, tomato, sport peppers, celery salt, mustard, a pickle spear and day-glow relish. It all added up to the perfect mouth full. Seriously, it was like having a hot dog for the first time. YUM.

A mini break down occurred over the Beignet. There is nothing more heavenly than fluffy, moist, fried dough covered in powered sugar. I dare you not to form a strong connection to this tasty treat. You’re gonna fall in love.

Frank was serving up all of their house signature cocktails. So clearly, we could not pass that up. We had a Daytripper cocktail which consisted of watermelon juice, Tito’s Vodka and mint. Then there was the Italian Honey cocktail, honey dew melon juice, Midori, Skyy Melon Vodka, honey and garnished with melon and prosciutto. Both were stellar, not overly sweet but refreshing and fun.
Our next guests in Austin we'll be sure to take to Frank!

My sister and I have been going to George's Coney Island Hot Dog's in Fall River, Massachusetts for over a decade. In my opinion they are the best and that is why they are making their debut on this here food blog!

No one there says anything except "you want the works or no?" I always get two, I always get the works, I always kick myself in the ass after for not just getting one.

Parkhouse Eatery is a cozy converted house that sits in San Diego's University Heights. We were quickly greeted by super friendly hosts and servers. We sat in a comfy nook inside and the server provided ample suggestions. Per her recommendation we tried the Parmesan Crusted Avocado and Chicken Sandwich and Breakfast Pizza. The pizza is delicious, but as for the sandwich, we are giving you fair warning... YOUR HEAD WILL EXPLODE FROM DELICIOUSNESS OVERLOAD! It is so good, we have no more words for it other than, EAT IT.

I have wanted to try Torchy's Tacos since the day I was born. Well....for awhile now and I finally had my big break the other day when they opened on Burnet Road in Austin!!! Hallelujah! Let's put it this way, I stayed true to my motto "Go Big or GO HOME."

I went big.

Taco ONE:
Green Chili Pork Taco
Slow roasted pork carnitas simmered with green chilis and topped off with queso fresco, cilantro, onions, and a lime wedge served on a corn tortilla with our green salsa.

Taco TWO:
Fried Avocado Taco
Hand battered fresh avocados fried and served with vegetarian refried beans, lettuce, pico de gallo and cheese served on a corn tortilla with our poblano ranch sauce.

Then I went back the other morning for

Taco THREE:
Dirty Sanchez
Scrambled eggs with guacamole, fried poblano chili, escabeche carrots, and shredded cheese served on a flour tortilla with our poblano ranch sauce.

Yes, it feels weird going to the front and asking for a "Dirty Sanchez" but you do it, because you have to.

Tucked away behind Cheer Up Charlie's on East 6th Street, lives a little lime green food trailer called Me So Hungry. Owner, Christina Alfonso has found a nice home for her Vietnamese cuisine in the East Austin community. Lucha Libre Taco Shop. Go to the airport. Get on a plane. Get in your car. Hitchike. Do whatever you have to do to get to San Diego, California and go to Lucha Libre Taco Shop immediately. Why?

First of all, it is awesome inside. The walls are hot pink and covered with various Lucha Libre (Mexican Wrestling) memorabilia. Their trash can is a television set with Anchorman Ron Burgundy on it. And there are old Lucha Libre movies playing on their flat screen. But, one of the highlights of the decor is the Champions Table.

It is a golden booth roped off from the rest of the shop reserved for VIPS (such as The Foodie Girls).

The service was excellent and the food was... WOW. The Surfin' California Burrito has Carne Asada, Shrimp, Avocado Slices, Cheese, Super Secret Chipotle Sauce and FRENCH FRIES. Yes, your eyes are not decieving you, french fries! It is huge, it is delicious, we passed out after eating it. It is amazing. There are a lot of delicious things to try. There is an assortment of burritos, tacos, quesadillas and bacon-wrapped hot-dogs (My. God.). But, the highlight was certainly the burrito.

Great place, get here now. And if you wear a Lucha Libre mask, you get a discount (and look awesome)!

Today the Foodie Girls returned from our filming hiatus .... you may have noticed that there have not been many posts lately. Well...it was our off season and now WE ARE BACK, hungrier than ever!

We attended the Cake Ball Event of the season! We sipped on champagne and ate tons and tons of balls. See Video.

Maru is a tiny little gem on Burnet near 45th. They serve sushi, traditional bento boxes, and various other delicious Japanese entrees. The food was great. The service was... interesting. Our server was uber-attentive on the verge of stalker-like. She was just kind of always looming, but didn't really do anything. However, it was comical enough that we had a good time. Plus, they gave us a complimentary dessert, which (you'll see in the video) also proved to be... interesting. Enjoy!

Day 2 of the Grand Wine & Food Affair was an outdoor event, the Sip and Stroll. We heard a rumor the day before that there would be Lobster Rolls at this days event. Foodie Girl 1 was foaming at the mouth. We scoured the entire event and then, there they were. Beautiful lumps of lobster in a buttered roll courtesy of Shanna Horner and Brian O’Hea from the Kennebunkport Inn in Maine. Holy Lobster Roll! So Amazing, we went back for seconds, thirds, fourths, fifths and then shared one because let’s not be greedy.

We relaxed at the pool for a breather before we embarked upon more amazing wineries and more brilliant chefs offering us their best.

SAO PAOLO Bartender: Major Offender!

We really like Sao Paolo. It's a nice place, they have good food, we've always had a great time there... until yesterday. It is with great sadness that the Foodie Girls give this Public Service Announcement.

The bartender at Sao Paolo, Jason, is a MAJOR JERK. Big time. Like, wow. We popped in yesterday for a cocktail before going to see a show. We sat at the bar and ordered two Martinis please. Jerko Jason plopped them in front of us and we noticed that they were only filled slightly more than half. The barback commented that their Martinis are usually filled to the top. We asked Jerko Jason about it, and then it all started...

Jerkface grabbed one of the Martini glasses, started pouring it out into shot glasses, meanwhile spilling most of it behind the bar, while we protested that we didn't understand what he was doing, he poured the shots back into the Martini glass, spilling more, pushed the drink in front of us, spilling more and said, "There. Now you don't think I'm shorting you." We said nothing. We only stared at him, this was weird. He then grabbed a bottle of vodka and started pouring it into the glass and all over the bar and said, "Why don't you just say when." We asked him to stop. We were stunned. We were now extremely uncomfortable. We asked the manager if we could sit outside. We recounted the story for her, to which she smiled and said "He's probably really busy."

No. He's a jerk.

She comped our drinks, but that's not what we wanted. We wanted a nice experience, not free drinks. Do not excuse rude behavior. Bottom line:

DO NOT DEAL WITH JASON THE BARTENDER, HE'S A JERK.

On this Valentine's Day, the Foodie Girls celebrated LOVE the only way they know how, by eating cheese. We stopped in on Antonelli's Cheese Shop in Hyde Park and are in LOVE with this place. Not only do they have cheeses from all over the world, they also carry cured meats, olives, honeycomb, Nutella, wine, beer and plenty of cheese-related goodness.

Kendall Antonelli says the store promises to bring tastings and cheese classes but for right now they're just trying to keep their heads above water. Austinites have clearly welcomed Antonelli's with lots of business. When we came in, they were plenty busy, but still took time to give us a great cheese tasting experience. They'll let you sample your weight's worth in cheese, are incredibly knowledgeable and really LOVE cheese!

FIRST BITE REACTION: ANNIE'S

Today the Foodie Girls had a simple wish. We wanted a healthy & delicious lunch on a cold, rainy day. Is that too much to ask? Apparently it is. Our intentions were honest. We wanted to review healthier restaurants for the New Year. We were originally going to review Living Beets Cafe. After perusing the menu we realize only two types of people eat here; 1. Vegans and 2. Rich Vegans. And if that is you, well done. But it ain't us! Nothing on the menu seemed accessible to people who aren't completely dedicated to that way of eating. So we left in search of our next great meal. We drove up and down the streets of Austin until we found a sandwich shop, but we thought there was better out there for us yet. So we left in search of our next great meal...again.

Finally, we spotted it.

A charming yellow building, with twinkle lights and a red door. The perfect little lunch spot, Annie's. Cue Merle/Earl, the waiter/owner/chef, we think. Merle/Earl confused us almost immediately. "You can order at the front, or sit or go to the bar for full service, or not get full service or look at the menu." WTF?!?!

We crossed through the rather large dining room area to the counter where you order. Merle/Earl, being the magician that he is, popped up from behind the counter to greet us again and take our order. We ordered their "signature soup" Tomato Brie and a Caprese Sandwich. Oh, the Caprese sandwich.

We moved on down the line (of no one) to the register to pay and there was Merle/Earl again playing the part of Cashier.

The soup was good. It would have been better if we had our sandwich to go with it, but it was really tasty. Around 20 minutes later Merle/Earl, now our waiter, brought us a cold Caprese sandwich. We weren't trying to be difficult we just really had our hearts set on a warm, melty Caprese sandwich.

Another 20 minutes later, Merle/Earl showed up with the Caprese again and said "Be careful it's very hot." It was cold. Like colder than it was before. If that is even possible. We hesitated to ask for it to be warmed up again, but we did.

At this point the sandwich had been made a Federal case. Four chefs, 2 waiters and we are pretty sure a bus boy, all gathered around the sandwich. Ugh.

Now we've been sitting with empty soup bowls for over 40 minutes, neither one of us even wants the stupid sandwich anymore. But it's back making it's final appearance to the Foodie Girl's table. We eat it, we film it. Not impressed. We left.

FINAL VERDICT: Don't Even Bother.

There are three large dining room tables that you share with other costumers allowing you to break bread with people you may not normally have the chance to. Lola in action is one of the finest one woman shows in town.

She greets new customers, she takes their orders and she prepares it herself in her small but efficient kitchen. There are daily specials and today's was Fried Chicken Wings with 2 sides. We signed up for one of those and a Fried Fish Dinner. Both dishes priced at $6.50 were served with more than generous portions!

Although we did have our hearts set on Lola'a delicious candied yams, Lola sometimes runs out of favorites early on. We were lucky enough however, to get a fresh batch of home made macaroni and cheese as one of our sides. The Fried Chicken Wings were everything a friend chicken wing should be, crunchy on the outside and moist on the inside seasoned heavily with Cajun spices. The Fried Catfish was massive and the batter was golden and perfectly encrusted the fish. Our sides were that fresh batch of mac and cheese, thick cut Cajun spiced french fries and smothered potatoes (hidden under white rice) who says you can't have 3 starches in one meal?

The Nubian Queen is not somewhere you want to pop into for a quick bite. Since Lola is running the show all by herself, orders can take upwards of an hour. But trust us, it's worth the wait! She is closed on Sunday's to feed the homeless.

EL CHILE

Before we ventured out to see Elizabeth Gilbert at the Paramount Theatre (see post below) we thought we would stop in at El Chile downtown for dinner and drinks.

The interior was filled with vibrant colors, intimate seating and paintings from local artists were displayed on the walls. We thought we would order a half size portion of their Nachos to start. When one thinks of Nachos one thinks of ... crisp tortilla chips smothered in cheese, beans, jalapenos and salsa...well the people at El Chile think of this.

What it ended up being was 6 chips with a spoonful of beans and cheese and if you were one of the lucky ones you actually saw a jalapeno on your individual chip. Let's do the math people, 6 chips at $5.00 ... we're talking almost a dollar a chip!

But maybe dinner would be better? We ordered the Puffy Chicken Tacos and Rajas Con Queso.

The main component of a Puffy Taco is a puffy, fried and crispy tortilla. Our tortilla was soggy, broken and the taco itself was a cold mess. It is so obvious when there is no love or thought behind the preparation of food. The chicken was bland and under seasoned. The beans and rice could honestly have been from yesterday. They had the skin that food can only get from sitting underneath the dreaded food lamp for too long.

As for the Rajas con Queso. The menu promises "Roasted Poblano and Caramelized Onions with melted Chihuahua and Monterrey Jack cheeses." They should just call it what it is, a bowl of cheese with a four, thinly sliced peppers. Not to mention the cheese hardened and became a cement nightmare that the chips had no chance of making it through. No Bueno.

El Chile is way over priced. The food does not earn those prices or fit the descriptions in the menu. Did we mention that one beer cost $6? You can get a cheaper beer at Fenway Park. If you are about to enter El Chile, you may as well save yourself some cash and disappointment and run across the street to Chipotle.

El Chilito on the East Side actually has pretty good tacos and is way cheaper.

ELIZABETH GILBERT LOVES FOODIE GIRLS!!!

It was the Friday night that the Foodie Girls had been waiting for! Elizabeth Gilbert, author of best-seller Eat, Pray, Love came to Austin's historic Paramount Theatre. The evening with Elizabeth was filled with stories, conversation with her fans and a book signing. Seeing as Elizabeth is a true food enthusiast, we thought it fitting to bring her one of Austin's tastiest treats, a Red Velvet Cupcake from Hey Cupcake!

We were nearly beside ourselves when the first thing she said when she took stage was "Austin is the coolest city ever, you people actually have trailers on the side of the road with cupcakes on them! I love this place!" We knew we were going to be a hit!

It was such a pleasure to listen to Elizabeth speak. She is a true storyteller by nature and speaks her truth with bravery and humor.

After begging us to take a photo with her, we agreed. She was excited to receive the cupcake and was nice enough to answer a few questions:

**UPDATE: HOME SLICE PIZZA EXPANDED TAKE OUT WINDOW FOR EASIER SERVICE!!

Home. GOOD. Slice. GOOD. Pizza. GOOD. Home slice pizza, damn good. Although there are some worthy competitors, we think Home Slice is the best pizza in Austin. We realize how bold of a statement this is (and we welcome you to email us your top favorite) but there is something just so simple and delicious about the pizza at this little hole in the wall on South Congress. Although the major downfall is that sometimes you just can't get in fast enough! They take no reservations, you can't call in your name for the wait list and the wait time for a table on most nights can be up to an hour. The bonus is that there is a take out window that is open 'til 11:30pm on week nights and 3am on weekends.

Normally when we visit HS we each have a slice of the Margherita Pizza, this traditional pizza is a perfect example of how tasty simplicity can be. All their pizzas are authentic New York style, large, thin crust, home made and hand tossed. Each pizza is made fresh to order on 2 inch bricks in an "old school deck oven" and is well worth the wait. This time around we thought we would try something different. We ordered from the "Tried and True" section of the menu. These are the HS "classics" so to speak. We ordered the #6 Sausage, Ricotta cheese and Roasted Red Pepper Pizza. Big lumps of ricotta, Italian sausage rounds and perfectly roasted red bell peppers.

We were glad we ventured out because this pizza was bomb...if lasagna were a pizza it would be the # 6. We have a hard time imagining a pizza that would not be great from Home Slice.

Quirky, eclectic, artsy and homey just a few words to describe our next food...adventure. Bare with us while we write this review through our food coma, as we just returned from Austin's well known Chez Zee. Manager Mark Fleming greeted us with as much energy and exuberance as is reflected in the restaurant's decor.

To start Mark brought us one of Chez Zee's signature dishes, Crème Brûlée French Toast. Like the quote says "LIFE IS SHORT, EAT DESSERT FIRST!" So we did and called it brunch. Challah bread soaked overnight in Crème Brûlée mixture, baked and toasted to order. Like anything soaked in deliciousness overnight could not be a home run? They did indeed knock this one out of the park.

Did someone say Quiche? Ex-quiche me? Indeed we did. The Quiche Du Jour was packed with squash, pepper jack cheese, bell peppers and onions. It was creamy, moist and fluffy.

The Portobellino Benedict Platter was next to make an appearance at the critic's table. But not for long, we went to town on that dish. Sitting on a bed of artichokes hearts, bell peppers, asparagus and sauteed onions were the world's most flavorful mini portabello mushrooms with 2 perfectly poached eggs sitting atop. All this was smothered in a very tasty lemon hollandaise sauce. Guaranteed to win over any critic...or at least these two.

Next were the Gingerbread Pancakes. One whiff of that ginger spice brought all the hope for the Fall season! Nice in flavor but perhaps at this point in our brunching feast, this dish was a bit heavy.

Though we were filled to the brim, Mark insisted we try a bit of what makes Chez Zee so popular, their fabulous desserts!

One slice of Lemon Rosemary cake and one slice of the Chocolate Decadence Cake. Holy Mother of God. The Lemon Rosemary cake was light, airy and the hint of rosemary well complimented the lemon. It said "Hello Lemon, you look lovely today," (that was meant to be said in a British Accent, FYI).

The Chocolate Decadence slice was ....well, decadent. Brushed lightly with seedless raspberry preserves this dessert was a chocolate lover's dream.

Amen.

Hidden in the heart of Austin's Warehouse District sits Saba Blue Water Cafe. On arrival we were met by a candle lit, blue tinted, sleek bar and restaurant. Although Saba is tucked away between Fado's Irish Pub and Cedar Street Courtyard it's a substantial space and atmosphere. Owner, Joe Reynolds, put out quite an impressive spread of some of Saba's signature dishes. For our first dish we sampled the Tempura Tuna. It surrounded layers of honey soy, wasabi and chili oil, it was a beautiful presentation. The first bite was packed with va-va-voom thanks to the combination of sauces.

Next we had Masa Fried Oyster Tostadas. So, so good. Sitting on fried plantain chips were 3 or more small, fried oysters with a cilantro cream reduction dribbled on top. Great texture, great flavor, yes please!

Moving forward...to Plantain Crusted Shrimp served with a mango, ginger sauce...which was like a fancy sweet and sour sauce...which was AWESOME! The shrimp was encrusted totally by the fried plantain and yet the shrimp flavor was not lost. A nice crunch with the fresh flavor of seafood. DEE-LISH.

As the plates kept on comin' we gladly kept on eatin.' The last savory dish was a Steak Churrasco sprinkled with sweet potato chips and a side of chimichurri sauce. With all the deliciousness that is Argentinian cuisine this dish surely captured it.

And now the favorite part of every meal...dessert. Ladies and Gentlemen we give you the Banana Pecan Spring Roll. Warm banana goodness, wrapped inside a crispy spring roll with cinnamon and brown sugar, heavily drizzled in chocolate sauce and served with 2 scoops of cold vanilla ice cream and a handful of warm pecans to boot. When you visit Saba, this treat is a must have!

The best part about Saba, aside from that Banana Spring Roll, is that it's a one-stop-shop. It can be your place for an intimate dinner with the nestled tables in the back lit by candle light or your happy hour spot after work for drinks and tapas and the same place you stay for dancing and drinks later into the night.

SOMNIO'S CAFE

Tucked away in Austin's south First Street neighborhood we stumbled upon "more than a restaurant" but a dining philosophy - Somnio's Cafe. Jay Guidry, owner/chef believes that "...eating should be respectful and sustainable to the world in which we live," which explains why his menu supports local farmer's produce. Somnio's, which was once a house has only 7 or 8 tables allowing it to keep that homey feel.

Now, let's get to the eats! To start we had as we like to call it "a massage in a glass" or better known as Lavender earl grey iced tea, the lavender just made this delicious beverage taste like relaxation. For appetizers we ordered Watermelon Gazpacho and Bison Dumplings. Two words, yum and yum. What better way to enjoy soup in the midst of the hottest summer ever, than a cooling, melon gazpacho. As for the bison dumplings, they were lightly pan fried with a savory bison and mushroom filling, drizzled lightly with Siracha. And who doesn't LOVE Siracha? And if you don't love Siracha then get out of our blog. We kid, we kid...but seriously, get out.

For the main dishes we got down and dirty with Nynavae's tacos which was filled with panko crusted mushroom fritters covered with a savory, spicy slaw. Although they were ginormous in size, they were actually quite lite.

Then (as if that weren't enough) there were the Pork Medallions served on a bed of greens with crispy buckwheat noodles. It was comforting, something similar to what Mom would whip up if we were starving and couldn't wait...and if my Mom knew what buckwheat noodles were.
To wrap up the night we nibbled on home-made peach bread pudding, which was moist and flavorful. Although at first glance it looked like a pile-a-poo, it actually exceeded expectations and was quite delicious (see below).
